01 / Choosing a grade
Three things settle almost every specification question.
The builder’s manual gives a viscosity grade (for example SAE 15W-40) and a performance level (for example API CK-4). Match both. A higher performance level is normally safe; a lower one is not, and a thicker grade than specified can starve a cold engine at first crank.
A truck that spends its life loaded on gradients is under far more thermal stress than the same truck on flat distribution work. Where duty is severe or drains are long, we will usually point you at the synthetic-blend option rather than the mineral one.
Drums are cheaper per litre but only if you can dispense cleanly and turn the stock before it ages. For low-volume lines, 20-litre pails keep contamination out and stock fresh. We are happy to advise on the mix.
